News Update Sunday Funday the 27th of November of 2011

Helloooo all this Capt. Mardi Gras reporting from Galaxy 420;

As you may have noticed, we've been pretty busy over here:

!) GOD DAMN SAVIOUR: First off, in a very monumental moment in Gnar Tapes history, we launched the FREE DEBUT MIXTAPE by Skinny Jesus (Izak Arida of BOOM! and The Memories). Stoner-ass heavy-duty rap with beats and snaps from Feather Headdress (the long-running beat production team of Erik Gage and Unkle Funkle) and guest beats from White Rainbow, Jib Kidder and Speculator. This is a CLASSIC, "MUST-COP" digital download. Available at the new site and on our DIGITAL SHOP page. Check out the video for "Get High", a doobie-jammer that samples The Memories song "Higher".

@) PRE ORDERS: For the first time EVER, we are offering PRE-ORDERS for some of our releases that are in mid-to post-production phases. You can scope those over in the SHOP page.

#) DISTRO DEPT.: Finally, after all these years, we are opening a DISTRO Dept. on our SHOP page. There are only a couple of titles in there right now, but we will be adding more (only cassettes and vinyl) as time goes on. For the most part, we will be offering releases we LOVE (heart), but you can contact us if you have something you think we'll like. Especially releases from bands that have released Gnar Tapes!

$) WHITE FANG "POSITIVE FEEDBACK": Awhile back our mascot band White Fang released their 4th album "Positive Feedback" on their bandcamp for FREE, as a thank you to their fans after the success of their 3rd album for Marriage Records, "Grateful to Shred". While being an instant-classic for WF fans and new fans alike, there was a consistent interest in the physical release of the album. Always a busy band recording-wise, the boys have been busy working on ANOTHER tape and ANOTHER album and a split 7". So the time has come for Gnar Tapes to step up to the plate and release this rockin' and catchy-as-hell, bong-rock masterpiece on our beloved cassette format. Not only that, but it will contain a new bonus song! And it will be hand-dubbed by the band themselves.

%) DIGITAL 7" DEPT: Also in our continued efforts to try new and fun things, we will be launching a bandcamp page devoted specifically to the periodical release of Gnar Tapes Digital 7"s. First conceived by White Fang for their "If I Had A Van" Digital 7", the basic idea is that each release contains two tracks, one being the single and the other being the bonus. Expect new jams from bands you love as well as solo-appearances and one-offs. There will be plenty to look forward to when this finally gets under way.

^) EVENTS/BOOKING DEPT: After all these years, we've been lucky to meet a fairly large amount of new friends, not only through this wonderfully weird Internet Place, but through traveling and playing shows. Recently, we've been putting on a lot more shows in Portland for touring bands on top of the showcases and parties being thrown by Gnar and Gnar bands around the city. So, in hopes to keep up with all of the goings-on, we will be adding an EVENTS page to our main site (this one). On this page we hope to keep up with Gnar Tapes sponsored events, including big parties and touring band shows, as well as band-by-band shows and tours. On the page there will also be information on how to get in touch with us and our associates for leads on who to talk to about booking shows in Portland and along the west coast.

&) GNAR.TV: Part of all of this, us and you, is the sharing of information. In the past, we've effectively used video not only to quickly and efficiently deliver information to our fans and customers, but were able to also express our styles and emotions with you. Not only that, but we like to think we lead some funny and exciting lives. So with that being said, we are preparing the launch of a NEW, separate site called GNAR.TV. On this NEW, separate site there will be an index of VIDEO content, including music videos, tour documentaries, event documentaries, band interviews, live videos, **sketches and shows!**, and curated outside-content. There will be more on this as it develops. For now, keep your eyes on our facebook, vimeo, and youtube.

*) And last, but not least, our illustrious and industrious leader of the pack, EG, has been keeping a marijuana/music blog for a little while. It is called Riff That Spliff, and you should get on that shit.

So, that's a lot of information and should keep you informed for the meantime. Thanks for supporting us and helping us do this. WE LOVE YOU! Drop us a line anytime!

Your friend,
The Capt.

COOL ANGELS - "DEMURE" & "GNARCOTICS UNANIMOUS"

Hey gnartards!

So Altered Zones said that the Cool Angels cassette "Demure" would be available for purchase yesterday, on Halloween. This would have been true had the tapes arrived on Friday when they were guaranteed (thanks NAC, twice in a row with the late arrivals) but they arrived yesterday. So, with that being said, Chris and I will get them up tonight after our White Fang show at Bunk Bar tonight with upcoming Gnar Tapes punk rockers Youthbitch.

NOTLS 2 - THIS SATURDAY!!!

WF + NS vids by JK

Gnar Tapes were on tour down the west coast earlier this month with White Fang and Nude Sunrise (from Chicago) and, while in Oakland (the night after a killer black light house show at Speculator and Weekend's ex-doctor's office third floor party pad), managed to get a night in w/ audio/visual virtuoso Jib Kidder to film three music videos in a row, however, the Jib Kidder video is not finished(?) yet.

Sick new one from the MAN. This track will be on the forthcoming Gnar Tapes Compilation #2. More where this came from. Speaking of DUDE, should we reissue "For the Weed Smokers"?

Diamonds A'rnt Forever by CCR Headcleaner

SF doobie brothers made a killer video for one of the sickest cuts from their Gnar Tapes self-titled release, CCR Headcleaner. VHS screw with fireworks and precision editing. Stunning! Watch out for their informative commercial at the end. Good work doobs.

GNIGHT AT PREBLON, etc.

Hello friends. This weekend on Saturday 7/30/11 we're throwing a fucking block party on the strip outside of the House of Preblon, home to the inimitable Indie Rock Sucks crew. The flyer has all you need to know, but there's going to be a lot more going on including food (bring your grill!)and Neza taco cart, etc., Gnar Tapes Dumbass Art Show, Gnar Tapes sales on shirts, tapes and posters, P-A-R-T-Y-I-N-G! Not to mention that the block party has a permit and will be legally blocked off so y'all can skate or whatever. And it's in the killer southeast industrial district (SE 10th Ave, between Stark and Pine to be exact). And of course it's free. WE ARE LOOKING FOR ABLE BODIED VOLUNTEERS FOR MANY LITTLE TASKS! PLEASE EMAIL ERIK @ GNARTAPES@GMAIL.COM!

Onto other news, the Jovontaes tapes will be up in the next day or so. We hand dubbed each and every one of these little tapes in mine and my girlfriend's living room. I've kind of been obsessing over this tape so it feels really, reallyyyy good to tell you that the clearly chill and patient dudes of Jovontaes will be getting their tapes very, veryyyy soon.

Some upcoming shows-

7/30 - Adrian Orange, Unnatural Helpers (Seattle), White Fang, BOOM!, Youthbitch, Ghost Mom, Grrrl Friend, Mustaphamond @ GNIGHT AT PREBLON (420 SE 10th Ave)

8/4 - Little Wings, The Memories, Alex Bleeker & The Freaks @ Ever Gold Gallery in SAN FRANCISCO, CA

8/13 - The Memories, Grandparents @ Alberta Street Fair

8/15 - The Memories and more @ GNAR GNIGHT @ Valentines (Portland)

9/3 - GNAR GNIGHT @ Agenda (bands TBA)

Saturday Can't Dance - News Update 7/16/11

I hear there's a heat wave-out there but you'd never know it if you were in Portland. My boss was going to have a BBQ but cancelled on account of a 80% chance of rain forcast. Fucking lame. He always has really good BBQs. Anyway, I'm staying inside and dubbing the upcoming 4-song Jovontaes tape. I honestly have not been this excited to release a tape since The Whines last year. I first heard them awhile back through the always awesome Eggy Records. Part of the increasingly killer Lexington, KY scene that's recently been pumping out killer stuff from killer people like Street Gnar (good name) and Trailblazer (who both put out excellent tapes on Eggy and more recently on the widely-admired Night People label). Jovo's Reid Small owns the now 15 year old Void Skateshop that's been a staple in the Lexington scene and where the band records a lot of their material.

Also we just posted up the equally exciting CCR Headcleaner tape, recorded by Adam Stonehouse from The Hospitals. Been looking forward to this for a long time. We've always been infatuated with the chill-dude vibes of Justin Flowers and Al Cargyle, but it's a whole 'nother pleasure getting to release their music ourselves. I don't expect to have it for long since those dudes have culled themselves quite the following from traveling so much and ruling it so hard. Get it now.

Also preparing for Young Prims demo collection with some beautiful tracks including sessions with Grave Babies and the Woodsist studio Rear House. Should have that one a little after Jovontaes.

We'll have the debut of sorts from the Portland by-way-of Long Island, NY dream rock band Grrrl Friend; the brainchild of stoner wanderer Duffy Rongiland who is also responsible for the awesome Portland video blog Indie Rock Sucks (http://www.indierocksucks.com/) and lives at choice Portland hangspot and house venue House of Preblon (the name was inspired after the tennants found a manifesto on the wall from the previous dwellers claiming their ethos for setting up shows there under the name "Preblon"). A hauntingly gorgeous album that blends pop, shoegaze and punk seemlessly and should be arriving in time for their set at:

GNIGHT OUT AT PREBLON block party on 7/30 w/ White Fang, BOOM!, Ghost Mom, Unnatural Helpers (Seattle/Sub Pop) and more.
We got a permit from the city to block off the road and call it ours! If you're in the region don't miss out on this wild all-day party!

A few days after that The Memories are having their San Francisco debut on 8/4 with Little Wings and Alex Bleeker & The Freaks. More details soon.

Speaking of which, there IS a forthcoming Little Wings tape that is sure to be one of our most popular and fastest-selling releases. Pre-order? I don't know. That might be stupid. We'll see.

UP NEXT!

- Campo Formio from Puerto Rico who have been planning their tape for almost 2 years now! First American release! Crazy ADD-as-fuck math-punk that packs the past 50 years of rock subgenres into a twisted, powerhouse garage-zoid sound en Espanol.

- Skinny Jesus, Izak Arida from BOOM!, new heavy grimed out solo rap project that will get fans of BOOM! very excited about the sheer quality of Izak's songwriting.

- The Whines WFMU session <3333333 with a possible reissue of their incredible demos collection that is on par with their excellent LP from last year, "Hell to Play", which is on par with The Wipers and Dead Moon for best first album by a Portland band.

- Timmy the Terror and the Winter Coats, Jimmy of White Fang's other band with former White Fang members Tyler Bristow and Thaddeus Pedisich (along with a whole host of freakish, awesome weirdos), sophomore tape that combines equal parts Captain Beefhart, Lightning Bolt and Daniel Johnston to create a truly unique and exciting brand of noise rock that is inspired directly from pop aesthetics and militant outsiderisms.

As always, that's just a little taste of what we got cooking for y'all over here at Gnar Tapes.

Drop a line or leave a comment.

- Erik

NEWS FART: 6/6/11

Well, buddies, Summer is almost here. The rain clouds are slowly leaving Portland, slowly. This last weekend was beautiful though. I think I speak for many when I say Saturday was a blissful and hazy kind of sabbath.

In recent news- the GNAR showcase at East End last week with The Reservations, BOOM!, White Fang, and Cole and the Rats was killer despite an almost complete lack of promotion on our part; better luck next time guys. We'll continue to have GNAR nights, with some this month at Valentine's and Tonic Lounge; we'll let you know the TBDs.

Also, we have The Reservations debut tapes ready for mail order. Just waiting on Chris to upload a picture of it. Also, we're working on two new compilations on top of the many tapes in production as of now.

JEEBUSSSSSSSSS

Yo! Sorry to be fuckin off for so long and not posting up on this shit for yall.

If you must know, the White Fang tour of the states was a success; no deaths, no jailtime, no diseases and beer + weed + greasy food everynight. What a time.

Anyway, if today is good, The Reservations tapes should arrive at one of our respective addresses today. This would be wonderful. I know we promised that the CCR Headcleaner and Jovontaes tapes would drop alongside The Res' tape,,,,,,, but the GNAR budget greatly suffered due to White Fang's tour van's transmission blowing up and gas prices blowing up. Sorry. I think Talking Helps Records (c'mon Fabi! call me back!) said they would give us some money and I think so will our intern, Lil Nicky. Just bear with us and believe in us.

As always, there are lots more tapes on the horizon. There are also lots of GNAR showcases and shows happening in the coming warmer months. Stay tuned for more about that. I know Extreme Animals said they'd be coming out. We have a PA and a generator now. And we're going down to the state cap of Salem to register as the GNAR PARTY.

Also, we'll have a video site soon.

OK I'm at work tho.
Love,
EWG

HAPPY 4/20!

Hey everyone! Writing this from a mattress on the floor of a rad house in Athens, GA. White Fang is on DAY 20 of our 35 day tour. Today we, along with our trusty sidekick and documentarian Brian Echon, head to Orlando, FL. We anticipate disgusting conditions of heat and humidity.

Word up. Just wanted to let y'all know that on this tour we've been selling two tapes that won't be on the site:
BOOM! - DOS (new full length)
and
White Fang - Tour Tape '11 (all new songs)

Obviously, mail orders are on hold right now but you can still place an order if you'd like.

When we get back-

CCR Headcleaner, The Reservations, Jovontaes

NEWS UPDATE: Monday 3/21

(Above: White Fang's Jimmy Leslie and Kyle Handley at "our" cabin studio in Sunriver, OR during last weekend's "Carpet Voyager Studio" sessions.)

To be realest with you: we've been slammed over here at Gnar Tapes. We're setting up for the next releases (The Reservations, CCR Headcleaner, Jovontaes) but chances are we might not get to their proper release until after April. This is because, as you may or may not know, White Fang (which is practically everyone operating GNAR) will be on a full-on United States of America tour. This means we'll be unable to handle mail orders or new releases during that time, though we'll still be accepting orders. We'll have a few tapes with us on the road, along with the new White Fang LP and a tour-only cassette of upcoming songs for our next record "Carpet City", as well as some 7"s, posters, and hopefully a shirt. We'll still be very much "present" on the web though, as those long drives practically beg for you to be using your phone to check your shit.

WHILE WE'RE ON TOUR, we'll be hoping for these things, in this order:

1) GAS MONEY.
2) A PLACE TO STAY FOR THE NIGHT (even just a floor)
3) FOOD (BURRITOS/PIZZA/SANDOS, though produce, nuts, and gravies are cool too)
4) MARIJUANA (also always accepting most other drugs)
5) BEER/TEQUILA/WHISKEY (but not turning away other beverages)
6) PEOPLE TO BUY OUR RECORDS/TAPES/CDS/ZINES/SHIRTS (SEE #1)

Also, if you live in a town/city/village we're visiting and you have a bedroom studio or a radio station or a videocamera (or whatever) we will be trying our damnedest to keep making things and posting them up here or on the www.whtfng.com or facebooks as the tour rolls on.

If you want to arrange a hang sesh, please email us at:

gnartapes@gmail.com

THANKS!!!

Charlie "Chuck" Hoffard is a cool guy. He used to play as a second drummer in White Fang, but these days occupies himself with skating, drawing, and drumming. By his-self. At his dad's house. Who knows what he'll do next; here's a fairly recent video:

White Fang "Grateful To Shred"

Fuck looks like the boys are still at it. Better get ready cuz the new White Fang album "Grateful To Shred" is coming to vinyl next month on Marriage Records. Things just got a little realer.
